Dark heaters– Invisible infrared heat without red light
Enjoy a comforting warmth you can feel but not see. Our dark radiators (also called black radiators) emit no disruptive light at all. They are the elegant and discreet heating solution for sheltered outdoor areas, conservatories, wellness areas, or interiors. Unlike bright radiant heaters, they warm the surroundings gently and evenly – similar to the effect of a tiled stove.

Dark Radiator Guide: Elegant warmth without light effects
Dark radiators are the "gentlemen" of infrared heaters: they do their work silently, invisibly, and extremely pleasantly. While classic radiant heaters often emit a harsh red light, dark radiators remain completely dark. This makes them the first choice for upscale restaurants, stylish private terraces, and interiors where the ambiance should not be disturbed by technical lighting.
Similar to infrared heating panels , dark radiators utilize long-wave infrared radiation (IR-C). This radiation does not primarily heat the air, but rather surfaces and objects. The result is a very gentle, comfortable warmth.
How does a dark radiator work?
Inside the device are electric heating elements, which are completely enclosed – usually by black anodized aluminum or high-quality ceramic fronts. This front heats up (to approximately 300 °C to 400 °C) and radiates the heat over a large area.
The most important differences to a classic radiant heater:
- No light: 0% light emission. Perfect for bedrooms, cozy lounges, or darkrooms.
- Warm-up time: While bright radiators are instantly hot, a dark radiator needs approximately 10 to 15 minutes of warm-up time to reach its full operating temperature.
- Gentle warmth: The heat is less aggressive, which is often perceived as more pleasant.
Areas of application: Where dark radiators make sense – and where they don't
Because dark radiators operate with long-wave radiation, the heat is somewhat more susceptible to wind than that of short-wave bright radiators. The ideal location for their use is therefore sheltered from the wind .
Perfect locations for use (indoors & sheltered outdoor areas):
- Conservatories & loggias: This is where they truly shine.
- Covered terraces: Provided they are sheltered from the wind (at least 3 closed sides).
- Catering: tent structures, smoking areas or glazed outdoor areas.
- Indoor spaces: bathrooms, wellness areas, yoga studios or as supplementary heating in the living room.
- Halls & Industry: For targeted heating of workplaces in large warehouses (zone heating).
Less suitable for:
On completely open, drafty balconies or unprotected terraces, some of the heat output is lost due to air movement. In these situations, we recommend more powerful radiant heaters .
Assembly and safety
The installation is extremely simple and is usually done using the included wall or ceiling brackets, which are often adjustable in angle.
Important safety instructions:
- Mounting height: Ideally, the height should be between 2.10 m and 2.50 m. If the unit is mounted too high, the gentle warmth will not reach the lower levels sufficiently.
- Distances: Be sure to observe the minimum distances to ceilings, awnings or curtains specified in the instructions, as heat can build up.
- IP protection class: For outdoor use (including covered areas), we recommend devices with at least IPX4 (splashproof) or preferably IP55/IP65. IP20 is sufficient for dry indoor use.
Frequently Asked Questions about Dark Radiators (FAQ)
Do dark radiators get very hot?
Yes, the surface reaches temperatures between 250 °C and 400 °C. Contact must be strictly avoided. However, they do not get as extremely hot as the filament of a radiant heater (up to 900 °C), which minimizes the risk of fire, but does not eliminate it entirely.
What performance do I need?
Since the heating phase takes a little longer and the heat is gentler, it's best to plan for a slightly larger area outdoors. For a sheltered area of approximately 8–10 m², we recommend at least one 2,400-watt unit or two 1,500-watt units for better heat distribution.
Can I operate the spotlight using the light switch?
Yes, many of our models can be hardwired and controlled via a light switch. However, for greater convenience, we offer devices with a remote control, dimmer, and timer . The dimmer is particularly useful for regulating the heat during the transitional seasons.
